Staying healthy can be hard when you’re trying to let go and have fun traveling with friends. Luckily, you don’t have to ruin your wellness goals while on vacation. Wherever you go, there are plenty of ways to stay healthy, happy and active. Check out these tips before you depart for your Spring Break adventure.
- Take advantage of your surroundings. The key is to sneak physical activity into your vacation. Most beaches have opportunities to rent kayaks or paddleboard equipment, but swimming and running are the best options if you’re on a tight budget. If you’re on a cruise, check out gyms on board or fitness classes. If you’re bundling up for snow, consider learning how to ski or snowboard. Personally, I like to go camping, and I schedule time to hike the trails. Explore your area because walking is a great way to stay physically active and sight-see.
- Use your body. A study from the Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports Exercise found it generally takes two to three weeks of inactivity to lose muscle mass, so you don’t have to worry about losing your “gains” during a short break. However, if you prioritize strength training, you don’t necessarily need a gym or equipment. Build muscle anywhere with bodyweight exercises. These exercises are incredibly efficient at building muscle and they can be modified for any fitness level. Push-ups, tricep dips, squats, lunges, crunches and supermans are some of my favorites. - Bring a refillable water bottle. Proper hydration is a must, but continuously buying water can get expensive. Refill your bottle every time you leave to prevent dehydration, save money and stay energized. Tap water is not always safe, so check your destination’s water safety before you go.
- Pack snacks. Stop by the supermarket when preparing for your trip. Save money and eat healthy by pre-making snacks or mini-meals. Don’t pay extra money every time you need a snack. Instead, keep apples, nuts, yogurt and peanut butter on hand. My favorite portable snacks include yogurt with blueberries, apples with peanut butter, or a bag of unsalted popcorn. Whip up some homemade energy bars or check out other portable snack recipes.
- Practice portion control. Don’t fall victim to over-sized meals and all-you-can-eat buffets. Save money and avoid overeating by taking home leftovers or try to not eat out every day. Also, listen to your body when eating out. Only eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full.
- Enjoy small indulgences. Part of traveling means experiencing the culture, including the cuisine. Appreciate the great food and avoid worrying about your regular routine. Try that famous dessert or have a specialty cocktail, but remember to stay balanced. Don’t eat a doughnut for breakfast, a hamburger for lunch, ice cream for a snack and pizza for dinner. Enjoy your vacation, but take care of yourself.
